It was a must see for me, who makes forecasts about RFID technologies while making fun of pointless technology forecasters. Yes I was in Hannover-Germany to visit CeBIT in its 20th issue last week.
By-passing Hannover, the city itself, the dedicated motorway for the fair made my first positive impression. As I proceeded, many different parking lots were served to walk into the fair campus. I stopped at lot Sud 2 (South 2), since it was the closest to the Hall 6, the meeting point for RFID innovators.
The exhibitors catalogue was downloadable as a mobile application to use on your PDA. (Just to complain; this catalogue was sold as a hard copy for nearly €10 in CeBIT Eurasia – Istanbul.) Also the information desks were kindly serving to visitors for searching in all exhibitors according to company name, product category or market segment.
Honestly, I don’t like technology shows. They are nearly the same in each country and are much like “electronic equipment shows” The CeBIT 2006 was as usual, and did not surprise me. I had already known it before my trip to Hannover, but among 6300 exhibitors, I had a special interest this time and other “new mobile phone followers” and “empty stands with barbies” did not disturb me.
After spending 2 full days in the fair, I was completely satisfied with the progress and had the chance to see and discuss every detail of RFID technology and applications in all details. Of course these details were not at “web page text” or “academic” level, but as high as miscellaneous real world applications, cost analysis, manufacturing process, RF reader technologies, some confidental parameters and new technologies which are under development.
To sum up, somewhere in these “gift shop” like shows under the heading “Technology” , you can find very valuable information if you are well equipped and had strategic contacts in advance.
Next year between March 15 th and 21st, just go and smell “technology” in Hannover, like 450.000 people did this year. Natürlich!
